Frequently Asked Questions
Therapy
What is your therapeutic compass?
As a black queer therapist, my approach is deeply rooted in my own experiences of often feeling unseen in traditional healing spaces. Recognizing the profound impact of being fully acknowledged, I embrace a holistic and liberation-focused approach to therapy. This approach is not just inclusive; it's a collaborative journey where I honor each individual as the expert of their own experience. I bring to light the often-overlooked intersections of identity, systemic oppression, and the healing significance of community.
In my role, I see myself as a facilitator, guiding individuals towards a healing that is inherently within their reach, yet often obscured by societal structures. By creating a space that respects and integrates their whole being, and by providing the necessary tools, I help unlock their healing potential. This process is not just about addressing immediate concerns but is a form of resistance against oppressive norms, a journey towards liberation that honors every facet of their identity and experience.
Who is an ideal client for therapy with VSM?
Our services are ideal for BIPOC and Queer adults who excel in their professional lives yet find themselves seeking deeper fulfillment and alignment in their personal journeys. If you often feel overwhelmed, overstimulated, or generally dissatisfied despite outward success, you're not alone. VSM is here for those who are ready to move beyond the weariness of 'just getting by' and are eager to live more authentically and vibrantly.
We also cater to those who feel trapped by their past experiences, finding themselves in cycles of distress that drain their energy and joy. If you're someone who believes there's more to life than the struggles you've faced and are keen to break free and embrace true well-being, our services are designed for you.
How long are the sessions?
Sessions are typically 50 minutes.
How often do sessions occur?
For individual therapy, weekly sessions are recommended for the first 4-6 weeks. This frequency helps establish a meaningful rapport and allows us to develop a comprehensive and individualized care plan tailored to your needs.
After the initial period, we’ll discuss if the current frequency remains effective for you. This collaborative approach ensures that our services are aligned with your evolving needs and progress.
For those undergoing EMDR therapy, consistency is key, especially during the early phases of rapport building and planning. A minimum of two sessions per month are initially recommended.
